AA1 form help: every answer written for you.
Got the Attendance Allowance claim form, the AA1? Tell us how things are, or let a family member or carer tell us, and we write what to tick and what to write for every question, including the night questions that decide the higher rate. £49 flat. No percentage of your award.
The AA1 is the decision. There’s usually no assessment.
Attendance Allowance is decided on the form itself. For most people there’s no assessment and no points: the tick boxes and the numbers in the “how often” boxes are the evidence.
Every care question starts “Do you usually have difficulty or do you need help…?” Tick No and the form skips it. Difficulty, slowness, or needing someone to remind or encourage you all count as Yes.
Ring the Attendance Allowance helpline before you post it. The date of the call can become the start of the claim, as long as the form is back within six weeks. The number is on GOV.UK.
Four things every answer gets right.
Written from what you tell us and the letters you send, against the Attendance Allowance rules.
The gate question, ticked right
Yes wherever there’s difficulty, pain, slowness or help needed, so no question gets skipped.
Help lines, with numbers
Each line is asked twice: difficulty and help. The help lines, with a number in the box, are what the claim is decided on.
The night questions
Questions 42 to 45 decide the higher rate, £114.60 instead of £76.70. Answered exactly as the form asks: times a night and minutes.
Written for whoever fills it in
The claimant, a family member or a carer. The answers are in the claimant’s own words.
The same question. Two very different answers.
The night questions decide the higher rate. What’s written in the boxes is what the decision is made on.
Question 42: “Do you usually have difficulty or need help during the night?”
“Sometimes, if I need the toilet.”
What the form records: nothing it can score. No times a night, no minutes.
“Twice a night, about 15 minutes each time. My daughter helps me to the toilet and back to bed.”
Times a night and minutes each time: exactly what the form asks, and what decides the higher rate.

Re: Your AA1 answers — what’s inside.
- What the form decides, explained — the two rates, and whether your answers reach the day condition, the night condition or both.
- Every care question, 29 to 45 — using the form’s own question numbers: the gate, the difficulty and help lines, and how often each day.
- Copy-ready answers in the claimant’s voice — in blue boxes for “anything else you want to tell us”, written in the first person whoever fills the form in.
- The night questions — times a night and minutes each time, the way the form asks, because they decide the higher rate.
- The statement from someone who knows you — what Questions 55 to 62 are for, and what the person writing it should cover.
- Your checklist, evidence list and where to send it — what to check before you post it, which letters to include, and the Freepost address.

Filling it in for a parent or partner?
Many AA1 forms are filled in by a son, daughter or partner. You can order for them and answer our questions on their behalf.
- Their words, not yours. The answers are written as they’d say them, in the first person.
- Your part comes later. Questions 55 to 62 are a statement from someone who knows them. That’s where you speak in your own voice.
- Have to hand: their conditions and medicines, and what you help with by day and at night.

Questions about AA1 form help.
If your question isn’t covered, email us at support@pipappeal.org.uk and we’ll reply same day.
The AA1 is the Attendance Allowance claim form, for people over State Pension age who need help or supervision because of an illness or disability. It’s used in England and Wales. GOV.UK explains Attendance Allowance.
Yes. Anyone can: the person claiming, someone helping them, or a family member. The answers are written in the claimant’s own words either way, and the statement from someone who knows them is written in that person’s own voice.
For most people, no. Attendance Allowance is usually decided on the form, and the DWP may contact the GP. That’s why the tick boxes and the numbers in the “how often” boxes matter so much.
The lower rate, £76.70 a week, is for help by day or by night. The higher rate, £114.60 a week, is for help by day and by night, or for a claim under the special rules. Rates are for 2026/27.
Our AA1 answers are for the AA1 used in England and Wales. In Scotland, Attendance Allowance has been replaced by Pension Age Disability Payment, which has its own application.
Your answers arrive by email within 24 hours.
Tell us about the conditions, the medicines, and the help needed by day and by night, and upload any letters or a prescription list. The more detail about how often help is needed, the stronger the answers.
Yes. Change any word that doesn’t sound right. If you remember something or want more detail added, reply to the email and we rewrite the answer for free.
£49 flat. We never take a percentage of the award or any backpay.
You can ask the DWP to look again, normally within one month of the decision. See our Attendance Allowance reconsideration letter.
