Attendance Allowance awarded? See what else it unlocks.
What Attendance Allowance Unlocks shows the other help an award opens the door to: Pension Credit and its severe disability addition, Council Tax help, Carer’s Allowance and when not to claim it, and what to claim in what order. £9. A PDF by email, yours to keep.
An award is only the start. What it unlocks can be worth more.
Attendance Allowance is £76.70 or £114.60 a week, tax free and not means tested. What the letter doesn’t say is that the award changes the answer to several other questions.
Once it’s paid, the person counts as severely disabled for Pension Credit, Council Tax Reduction and Housing Benefit, and whoever looks after them may be able to claim Carer’s Allowance. Claimed in the wrong order, one can cancel another out.
Claim Pension Credit first. A claim can be backdated three months, so ring as soon as the award arrives, or before, and say the award is in.
Four things the award opens the door to.
Written from the 2026/27 DWP rates, for the person awarded and their family.
Pension Credit, and £86.05 a week
The severe disability addition raises the guaranteed minimum, so someone refused before may now qualify. And Pension Credit unlocks more again.
Council Tax, two ways
Council Tax Reduction, which is means-tested, and the disability band reduction, which isn’t. A household can have both.
Carer’s Allowance, and the trap
If Carer’s Allowance is paid, the person cared for can lose their £86.05 addition. The guide shows when to claim, and when not to.
The checklist, in order
Five steps, in the order that protects the money, with the phone numbers you’ll need.
The same award. Two very different outcomes.
The worked example from page 3 of the guide.
A single pensioner on £260 a week is awarded Attendance Allowance.
She gets her Attendance Allowance, and nothing else changes.
Her income is above the £238.00 Pension Credit minimum, so she never thinks to claim.
She claims Pension Credit with the severe disability addition, and gets about £64 a week more.
The minimum she’s measured against becomes £324.05. That’s over £3,300 a year, on top of her Attendance Allowance.

Re: What your Attendance Allowance unlocks — what’s inside.
- Why an award is only the start — what being on Attendance Allowance changes, and why the second set of money can be bigger than the first.
- Pension Credit — the guaranteed minimum, the £86.05 severe disability addition, a worked example, savings and the house, and how to claim.
- What Pension Credit unlocks — Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, the TV licence at 75, the Warm Home Discount and NHS costs.
- Council Tax, two ways — Council Tax Reduction, the disability band reduction, and the single person discount with a live-in carer.
- Carer’s Allowance, and the trap — when it costs more than it pays, underlying entitlement for carers on a State Pension, and what to do if the carer is under pension age.
- The rest, and the checklist — rent, heating, Blue Badge, care charges and Scotland, then five steps in order with the phone numbers.

Plus 6 other kinds of help that could apply to you

The guide names each one, says how to claim it, and the order that protects the money.
A rough estimate using the 2026/27 rates, not a full benefits check. It assumes you’re over State Pension age and that nobody is paid Carer’s Allowance for looking after you. Some income doesn’t count, and council schemes vary.
