PIP Appeal Phone Number & Contact Addresses (2026)

Pip Appeal Phone Number And Address
Last updated: March 2026

To appeal a PIP decision or request a mandatory reconsideration by phone, call the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433 (textphone: 0800 121 4493). Lines are open Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, and free from UK landlines and mobiles. To submit a tribunal appeal, post your SSCS1 form to HMCTS or apply online at GOV.UK. There is no email address for PIP appeals.

But getting through isn’t always straightforward — and calling the wrong number is a mistake we see people make all the time. This page has every PIP contact number, postal address, and online option you’ll need. Bookmark it.

PIP Phone Numbers

Here’s every PIP telephone number you might need. The two main numbers serve different purposes — and getting them mixed up wastes time you don’t have.

DepartmentPhoneTextphoneHours
PIP enquiry line (appeals, MR, complaints, changes of circumstance)0800 121 44330800 121 4493Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm
PIP new claims0800 917 22220800 917 7777Mon–Fri, 8am–5pm

All PIP phone numbers are free to call from UK landlines and mobiles. You won’t be charged regardless of how long you’re on hold.

A quick but important point: the number you need for appeals and mandatory reconsiderations is 0800 121 4433 — the PIP enquiry line. Not 0800 917 2222. That second number is only for starting new claims. We’ve seen other websites list the wrong one, which means people end up in the wrong queue entirely. (One well-known charity site has had the incorrect number published for over a year.)

Other ways to call

If you can’t use a standard phone, there are alternatives:

  • Relay UK: Dial 18001, then 0800 121 4433 (or 18001 then 0800 917 2222 for new claims). Works through the Relay UK app or a textphone.
  • BSL video relay service: Available for British Sign Language users through InterpretersLive. You can use this on a computer, mobile, or tablet.
  • Calling from abroad: For new claims, ring +44 191 218 7766.

PIP Postal Addresses

Where you send your PIP paperwork depends on what you’re sending and who you’re sending it to. This is where people often get confused — so here’s a clear breakdown.

The Wolverhampton address — what is it?

If you’ve searched for “PIP appeal address Wolverhampton,” here’s the answer. Wolverhampton is the location of DWP’s central mail handling and processing centre — it’s where PIP claims paperwork is opened, scanned, and distributed. The address (Post Handling Site B, Wolverhampton, WV99 1AH) is specifically for new PIP claims by post. It’s not where you send appeal forms.

Your SSCS1 tribunal appeal form goes to HMCTS (the courts service), not the DWP. And your mandatory reconsideration letter goes to the DWP office that handled your claim — the address will be printed on your decision letter. If you’ve lost that letter, ring 0800 121 4433 and ask for a duplicate.

Important posting tips

Always send PIP paperwork by Royal Mail Signed For or Special Delivery so you have proof it arrived. The DWP’s Freepost address doesn’t accept tracked delivery — if you need proof of postage, use the full address on your decision letter instead. And keep a copy of everything you send. Photograph each page with your phone if you don’t have a photocopier.

Online Contact and Tracking Your Appeal

Can you email PIP about your appeal?

No. The DWP does not accept PIP queries, claims, or appeals by email. They don’t have a public email address for PIP — this is a security decision on their end. You’ll need to phone or write. (HMCTS, the tribunals service, does have email addresses — see Other Useful Numbers below.)

Submitting your appeal online

You can submit your SSCS1 appeal form online through GOV.UK instead of posting it. This is often quicker and you’ll get an email confirmation as a record. Start here:

Submit your appeal on GOV.UK

You don’t need to create an account. You will need your mandatory reconsideration notice (MRN) number. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our guide to filling in the SSCS1 appeal form.

Manage Your Appeal online

After you’ve submitted your appeal (whether online or by post), HMCTS offers a service called Manage Your Appeal. If you provided an email address or mobile number on your SSCS1 form, you’ll get a link to sign up. Through the service you can track the progress of your appeal, upload additional evidence (including video and audio), receive text and email updates, and confirm hearing dates. For more on this, read our guide to tracking your PIP appeal.

Starting a PIP claim online

Some areas of England, Wales, and Scotland now allow you to start a new PIP claim online at apply-for-pip.dwp.gov.uk. This isn’t available everywhere yet — the site will tell you if your postcode is covered.

Phone vs Writing: Which Is Better for an Appeal?

You can request a mandatory reconsideration over the phone. But should you?

In our experience helping hundreds of PIP claimants, we’d strongly recommend putting your case in writing — even if you start with a phone call. Here’s why.

Phone calls leave no paper trail you control. The DWP will make notes, but their record of what you said may not capture everything. If you forget a key point or your wording is slightly off, there’s no way to go back and fix it. And if there’s ever a dispute about what was discussed, you’ve got nothing to show.

Writing gives you time to think through your arguments, reference specific PIP descriptors and points, and attach supporting evidence. It also creates a document the decision-maker reads carefully — not a summary scribbled during a phone call.

Our advice: If you’re close to the one-month deadline, phone first to register your mandatory reconsideration (this protects your deadline), then follow up in writing with a detailed letter. For help structuring that letter, see our PIP appeal letter template guide.

Long Wait Times: Tips for Getting Through

Let’s be honest about this: getting through to the PIP enquiry line can be a miserable experience.

Wait times of 30 to 50 minutes are common. A parliamentary answer in early 2025 revealed that average waits on the general PIP enquiry line had hit over 36 minutes following technical issues (source: Parliamentary question on PIP Telephone Services). And it gets worse. A freedom of information request by Benefits and Work found that in April 2023 alone, almost half a million callers were disconnected before they even reached the queue (source: Benefits and Work, June 2023). Recent reports from early 2026 suggest the problems haven’t gone away — callers still describe being cut off after long waits, sometimes repeatedly.

So what can you do?

Five tips for getting through

  1. Call right when lines open. The PIP enquiry line opens at 9am Monday to Friday. Calling in the first few minutes gives you the best chance of a shorter wait.
  2. Try mid-afternoon. If early morning doesn’t work, 3pm–4pm tends to be quieter than the lunchtime rush.
  3. Don’t hang up during silences. DWP’s automated call system sometimes goes quiet for a couple of minutes after the initial greeting. It’s not a fault — stay on the line.
  4. Write instead. If you can’t get through and your deadline isn’t imminent, send your mandatory reconsideration in writing to the address on your decision letter. This is often more reliable than relying on a phone call.
  5. Contact your MP. If you’ve been unable to reach the DWP and your PIP claim is stalled or at risk, your local MP can chase it up on your behalf. Find yours at writetothem.com.

Lost your decision letter?

Don’t panic. Call the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433 and ask for a duplicate. They can also confirm the address you need to send your mandatory reconsideration to. If you can’t get through by phone, write to Freepost DWP PIP 1 and request a replacement.

Frustrated by the phone lines? You don’t have to rely on a call to make your case. Our £49 letter-writing service produces a professional mandatory reconsideration or tribunal appeal letter tailored to your conditions and descriptors — ready to post.

Northern Ireland PIP Contacts

PIP in Northern Ireland works differently. It’s administered by the Department for Communities (DfC), not the DWP — and the phone numbers, postal addresses, and even appeal forms are different.

NI appeals are handled by The Appeals Service (TAS), not HMCTS. You’ll use a form called the NOA1(SS) rather than the SSCS1, and send it to: The Appeals Service, PO Box 2202, Belfast, BT1 9YJ. You can also submit a NI appeal online through The Appeals Service website.

Frequently Asked Questions

The PIP enquiry line number is 0800 121 4433. This is the number for appeals, mandatory reconsiderations, complaints, and changes of circumstance. The textphone number is 0800 121 4493. Both are free to call from UK landlines and mobiles, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Yes. The PIP enquiry line (0800 121 4433) and the PIP new claims line (0800 917 2222) are both freephone numbers. You won’t be charged from any UK landline or mobile, even if you’re on hold for a long time.

The PIP enquiry line (for appeals and reconsiderations) is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The new claims line opens an hour earlier, at 8am. Both lines are closed on weekends and bank holidays.

You can start a mandatory reconsideration by phone — call 0800 121 4433 and tell them you disagree with the decision. However, you should always follow up with a written letter explaining your reasons. For the next stage (tribunal appeal), you’ll need to submit an SSCS1 form — either online through GOV.UK or by post.

For England and Wales, send your completed SSCS1 form to: HMCTS Benefit Appeals, PO Box 12626, Harlow, CM20 9QF. For Scotland: HMCTS SSCS Appeals Centre, PO Box 13150, Harlow, CM20 9TT. For Northern Ireland, send the NOA1(SS) form to: The Appeals Service, PO Box 2202, Belfast, BT1 9YJ. Always check the address on the most current version of the form.

No. The DWP does not accept PIP queries or appeals by email. You must contact them by phone (0800 121 4433) or in writing. However, HMCTS (the tribunal service) does accept email enquiries about your appeal — contact contactsscs@justice.gov.uk for England and Wales, or SSCSA-Glasgow@justice.gov.uk for Scotland.

The Wolverhampton address (Post Handling Site B, Wolverhampton, WV99 1AH) is DWP’s mail processing centre for new PIP claims, not for appeals. Tribunal appeals go to HMCTS in Harlow. Mandatory reconsideration letters should be sent to the address on your decision letter, or to Freepost DWP PIP 1.

Try calling at 9am when lines open, or mid-afternoon when call volumes tend to drop. If you still can’t get through, write to the DWP instead — you can send your mandatory reconsideration to the address on your decision letter or to Freepost DWP PIP 1. You can also ask your local MP to contact the DWP on your behalf through writetothem.com.

Once you’ve submitted your appeal, you can use the HMCTS Manage Your Appeal online service to track its progress. You’ll receive a link by email or text if you provided contact details on your SSCS1 form. You can also phone HMCTS on 0300 123 1142 (England and Wales) or 0300 790 6234 (Scotland).
