WCA assessment coming up? Go in prepared, with your own notes.
The WCA Assessment Preparation Workbook takes you through the Work Capability Assessment before, during and after: a worksheet for each of the seventeen activities, the hard moments scripted, and the two questions the assessor won’t ask. £12. A PDF by email, yours to keep and print.
The assessment is short. Your notes make it count.
A Work Capability Assessment is one appointment, by phone, video or in person, with a healthcare professional working for the DWP. What they write in the report, the UC85 or ESA85, is what the decision maker reads.
And the assessor is scoring you against two lists, not one. Fifteen points from the seventeen activities means limited capability for work, but the money sits behind a second list of sixteen descriptors where points don’t matter at all. Almost nobody walking in knows there are two lists. Most people also answer from memory and describe their better days. Going in with your own notes changes that.
Start as soon as your appointment letter arrives. Fill it in over a week or so, one or two worksheets a day, ideally with the person coming with you.
Four things that help on the day.
Written from the WCA rules, for you to fill in and take with you.
A worksheet for every activity
All seventeen, each with the descriptor ladder and points, the trap that catches people, and a box for your answer.
The answer that scores
A four-part shape for every answer: what you can’t do, why, what happened, and how often. So the frequency never gets left out.
The two questions they won’t ask
Substantial risk, and eating and drinking. Neither is on the form, both can decide your group, and the workbook shows you how to raise them.
The report, decoded
How to read your UC85 or ESA85 afterwards, the errors that appear again and again, and an error log for yours.
The same question. Two very different answers.
Every assessor asks something like this. What you say is what goes in the report.
“Can you walk to the shops?”
“Yes, I can manage that.”
What the report records: can walk to the shops. Nothing about distance, stops or how often.
“About 100 metres before I have to stop for a few minutes, and I don’t go again that day. That’s most days.”
Distance, the stop, what it costs and how often: the four things the score depends on.

- Part one: before — what the assessment decides, the answer that scores, your conditions and medication, and your day honestly: a bad day, a better day, and how many of each.
- Seventeen activity worksheets — each with the descriptor ladder and points, the trap that catches people, and a box for your answer.
- The two questions the assessor won’t ask — substantial risk, and eating and drinking, with how to raise them yourself.
- A page for the person who comes with you — what to write down and what to make sure gets said, plus a checklist for the week before.
- Part two: during — the eight hard moments scripted in advance, and an assessment record sheet.
- Part three: after — getting your UC85 or ESA85, the report decoded, the errors that appear again and again, and your error log.

What happens after your assessment.
The assessor writes a report, then a DWP decision maker decides. Two ways it usually goes.
You’re found to have LCW or LCWRA
Your decision letter says which group you’re in. LCWRA adds the health element to your Universal Credit and removes your work requirements.
You’re found fit for work, or put in the wrong group
You can ask the DWP to look again, normally within one month of the date on your decision letter. See how we’d argue your case with a free WCA preview first.
Still to send your WCA50? WCA50 form help writes every answer for you, and you can add this workbook at checkout. See all our services.
