WCA · Universal Credit & ESA · Work Capability Assessment
WCA50 form help: every answer written for you.
Got the WCA50 capability for work questionnaire? It replaced the UC50 and ESA50 in November 2025. Tell us how your health affects you, and we write what to tick and what to write for every question, including Question 101, the box that decides most cases. £49 flat. No percentage of your award.
The WCA50 decides your group, and your health element.
Your answers, and the assessment that follows, decide whether you’re found fit for work, have limited capability for work (LCW), or limited capability for work-related activity (LCWRA). Only LCWRA adds the health element to Universal Credit.
Every activity starts with “Can you … without difficulty?” Tick Yes and the form skips it. “Without difficulty” is the test, not “at all”, and “It varies” on its own scores nothing.
Send it back by the date on the letter that came with it, to the Health Assessment Advisory Service, not the Jobcentre. If it’s late without a good reason, you can be treated as fit for work.
Four things every answer gets right.
Written from what you tell us and the letters you send, against the WCA rules.
The gate question, ticked right
If you do it slowly, painfully, with help, or not every time, the answer is No. We mark it for every activity.
Question 101, written for you
The only place on the form for substantial risk, the rule that decides most cases regardless of points.
The LCWRA descriptors, pointed out
Some answers place you in LCWRA on their own, like needing prompting to eat at Questions 35 to 37. We show you which.
The higher rate, checked
If your condition is lifelong and NHS-diagnosed, we tell you whether the higher LCWRA rate is worth arguing for, and what evidence proves it.
The same question. Two very different answers.
The WCA50 isn’t only about walking and lifting. The mental health questions need the same detail.
Coping with social engagement: “Can you meet people you don’t know?”
“I don’t like it, but I can.”
What the assessor reads: you can. That usually means no points for this activity.
“Most days I can’t. My chest goes tight and I leave. Last month I walked out of the jobcentre before my name was called, and I couldn’t go back for a week.”
How often, what happens, and a real example: what the descriptors look for.
Fit for work, LCW or LCWRA: what each means.
The group you’re put in decides your work requirements and, for most people, whether Universal Credit pays anything extra.
| What | Fit for work | LCW | LCWRA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work requirements | Look for and prepare for work | Prepare for work only | None |
| Extra money in Universal Credit | None | None, for most claims | £217.26 a month, or £429.80 for earlier claims and severe conditions |
| How you get there | Under 15 points | 15 points or more | One LCWRA descriptor, most of the time |
Your WCA50 answers decide which column you end up in.

Re: Your WCA50 answers — what’s inside.
- What the form decides, explained — fit for work, LCW or LCWRA, and what each one means for your money and your work requirements.
- Every activity, question by question — all seventeen activities and the eating and drinking questions, using the form’s own question numbers.
- Copy-ready answers in your voice — in blue boxes that match the boxes on the form. Copy them exactly, or change anything that doesn’t sound like you.
- Question 101, written for you — the substantial risk case, in your own words, for the box most people leave blank.
- The LCWRA descriptors and higher rate, checked — which answers can place you in LCWRA, and whether the higher rate is worth arguing for.

What happens after your WCA50.
Most people have an assessment next, by phone, video or in person, then a decision letter. Two ways it usually goes.
You’re found to have LCW or LCWRA
Your decision letter says which group you’re in. LCWRA adds the health element to your Universal Credit and removes your work requirements.
You’re found fit for work, or put in the wrong group
You can ask the DWP to look again, normally within one month of the date on your decision letter. See how we’d argue your case with a free WCA preview first.

Questions about WCA50 form help.
If your question isn’t covered, email us at support@pipappeal.org.uk and we’ll reply same day.
The WCA50 is the capability for work questionnaire. It replaced the UC50 and ESA50 on 24 November 2025, and it is used for both Universal Credit and New Style ESA. Your answers, and the assessment that follows, decide whether you are fit for work, have limited capability for work, or limited capability for work-related activity. GOV.UK explains Universal Credit and health conditions.
The WCA50 replaced both. If you’ve been sent an older UC50 or ESA50, email us at support@pipappeal.org.uk before you order and we’ll check it fits your form.
By the date on the letter that came with it. Send it to the Health Assessment Advisory Service, not the Jobcentre. If it’s late without a good reason, you can be treated as fit for work. If you need longer, ring the number on the letter before the date and say why.
Question 101 is the only place on the form for substantial risk: if being found fit for work, or made to look for work, would put your health at substantial risk, you can qualify regardless of points. The form never asks about it directly, so we write it for you, in your own words.
Limited capability for work (LCW) needs 15 points and means fewer work requirements, but no extra money in Universal Credit. Limited capability for work-related activity (LCWRA) needs one of sixteen specific descriptors, or substantial risk. It removes your work requirements and adds the health element: £217.26 a month for most new claims from April 2026, or £429.80 for earlier claims and the severe conditions criteria.
Your answers arrive by email within 24 hours. Your return date is in your answers too.
Tell us about your conditions, your medication and how your health affects you, and upload any letters you have. The more you tell us about how often things happen, and what happens when you try, the stronger your answers will be.
Yes. Change any word that doesn’t sound like you. If you remember something or want more detail added, reply to the email and we rewrite the answer for free.
£49 flat. We never take a percentage of your award or your backpay.
You can ask for a Mandatory Reconsideration, normally within one month of your decision. See how we’d argue it with a free WCA preview, or go straight to a WCA Mandatory Reconsideration letter.
