Questions

Which benefit: questions answered.

It depends mainly on your age and where you live: PIP (ADP in Scotland) from 16 to State Pension age, Attendance Allowance (Pension Age Disability Payment in Scotland) over State Pension age, and DLA (Child Disability Payment in Scotland) for children.

Yes. PIP isn’t counted as income for Universal Credit, and getting PIP means your UC can’t be reduced by the benefit cap.

Yes. PIP isn’t affected by work, earnings or savings. It’s about how your condition affects daily life and getting around.

PIP helps with the extra costs of disability, whether or not you work. ESA (and the health part of Universal Credit) is about whether your health limits your ability to work.

Universal Credit is means-tested and can include housing costs. New Style ESA depends on your National Insurance record, not your income or savings. Some people get both.

No. If you already get PIP, it continues after State Pension age and you don’t claim Attendance Allowance.

Carer’s Allowance (Carer Support Payment in Scotland) is £86.45 a week if you care for 35 hours or more for someone getting a qualifying disability benefit, and earn under £204 a week.

No. It points you to the main benefits to look at. For a full check of everything, use a benefits calculator or Citizens Advice.
